Breeding and Genetics
Breeding Inquiries
Occasionally, we are open to conversations with like minded breeders regarding potential stud services or future breeding collaborations. Any consideration is based on shared values around temperament, health, care practices, and responsible breeding. Understanding Loki’s Genetics
Understanding Loki’s Genetics
Chocolate Carrier Status, Merle Safety, and Our Breeding Philosophy
At Krystal Chow Bears, we believe that every dog has a story, and every breeding decision should be guided by care, knowledge, and respect for the future of the breed. Loki is at the heart of our program, and we want families to understand not just her beauty, but the thoughtful approach behind every plan we make for her.
This page explains Loki’s chocolate carrier status, our stance on merle breeding, and how we approach finding the right match for her when the time comes.
What “Bb” Means for Loki
Loki is black in appearance, but she carries the chocolate gene, known genetically as Bb.
Because Loki has one of each, she looks black, but she is a chocolate carrier. This comes from her lineage. Loki’s father is chocolate, which means he could only pass on the “b” gene. Loki’s black coat tells us she received the “B” gene from her mother.
Can Loki Produce Chocolate Puppies
Yes, Loki can, but only with the right pairing. Here’s how it works:
Because of this, we are open to finding a chocolate or confirmed carrier stud that aligns with our standards for health, temperament, and structure.
Why We Do Not Breed Loki With Merle
Loki’s mother is merle, which means Loki may carry the merle gene, even though she does not show merle coloring herself. This is uncommon in solid back Chows, but still possibility.
Breeding a merle carrier to another merle or merle carrier can result in double merle puppies.
For this reason, our program has a strict policy: We do not breed Loki with merle Studs. This decision is rooted in health, not appearance. Our priority is always reducing avoidable genetic risk.
How We Choose a Stud for Loki
While we are open to finding a chocolate stud, color alone is never our deciding factor. We look for:
- Verified DNA testing, including confirmation of chocolate and merle status
- Strong health clearances for eyes, hips, thyroid, and overall wellness
- A calm, stable temperament suitable for family life
- Balanced structure and sound movement
- A breeding partner who values transparency and ethical practices
Only when these qualities align do we consider moving forward.
Why We Share Loki’s Story
We believe families deserve to know:
- Where their puppy’s traits come from
- How genetics influence both color and health
- What steps we take to protect future generations
By sharing Loki’s background, we invite families into the thoughtful process behind every decision we make.
Our Philosophy
At Krystal Chow Bears, breeding is never about chasing trends or rare traits. It’s about honoring a breed with thousands of years of history by making careful, informed choices that protect:
- The well-being of our dogs
- The health of future litters
- The trust of the families who welcome our puppies into their homes
Loki is more than our breeding female. She is part of our family, and every plan we make reflects that.
